Artist Statement
Placing the Earth in the heart of the Mandala is the essence of this image. Every time we see it, we are reminded to be global stewards, to honor, respect, and care for the Earth, while taking action and responsibility in our own ways of life. The interdependence of climate and of all life on Earth is transforming at a remarkable depth and rate of progression; it is time to center the Earth in our hearts.
The word Mandala means circle. Mandalas define space, they separate the everyday from the sacred and then merge them back together in a more coherent manner, so that the spiritual can be located in our everyday actions. Mandalas are often seen as blueprints or diagrams composed of a coordinated series of circles and squares, which represent the walls and gateways that allow us to enter and progress toward the inner region, a deeper awareness at the center of the Mandala. Seeing the Earth in the center of the Mandala, can be a very powerful experience.
This Mandala is formed by using the elements of nature. Blue ocean waters surround layers of golden yellow sands and fiery red textures of autumn leaves. Emerging through to the atmosphere of a dark blue star lit night within which the void of space embraces our glorious Earth. The Sacred Earth Mandala may be regarded as a functional symbol to aid in our collective effort to stabilize and reverse the climate crisis, protect the environment, and promote a sustainable ecology on Earth.
